Europe's big Christmas markets open in two waves in 2026: Vienna's Christkindlmarkt and Cologne's Cathedral market in mid-November (November 13 and 16), then Nuremberg and Strasbourg on November 27 and Prague on November 28, which runs to January 6, 2027. All dates come from the organizers' own sites, checked on October 21, 2026; Budapest had not announced its dates yet. A single VoyaSIM Europe eSIM covers every one of these cities, from $1.10 a day or $6.80 for 5 GB over 30 days.

The 2026 dates, from the organizers
Christmas markets open on a schedule set by each city, not by the calendar, and the 2026 edition starts early: Vienna and Cologne open the weekend before the first Advent Sunday. These are the official dates as published on each market's own website, read on October 21, 2026:
| City | Market | Opens | Closes | Hours |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Vienna | Christkindlmarkt, Rathausplatz | Fri Nov 13 | Sat Dec 26 | 10 am–10 pm daily; Dec 24 until 6:30 pm |
| Cologne | Weihnachtsmarkt am Dom | Mon Nov 16 | Wed Dec 23 | 11 am–9 pm Sun–Wed, 11 am–10 pm Thu–Fri, 10 am–10 pm Sat; closed Nov 22 |
| Nuremberg | Christkindlesmarkt | Fri Nov 27, 5:30 pm ceremony | Thu Dec 24 | 10 am–9 pm daily |
| Strasbourg | Christkindelsmärik | Fri Nov 27 | not yet published | not yet published |
| Prague | Old Town Square & Wenceslas Square | Sat Nov 28 | Wed Jan 6, 2027 | see organizer site |
| Budapest | Vörösmarty Square & Basilica | not yet announced (mid-November expected) | — | — |
Two things worth knowing. Vienna's market closes on December 26, but the Ice Dream rink on the same square runs to January 6, 2027. And Cologne's Cathedral market closes for one day on November 22, the German day of mourning for the dead; the other Cologne markets follow the same rule.
Which weekend to pick
For the opening buzz: November 13–15 in Vienna. The Rathausplatz market is the largest in the city and the first of the big ones to open; the trees in the park are lit the same evening. Hotels are still at November prices.
For the classic postcard: November 27–29. Nuremberg's opening ceremony on the 27th, with the Christkind reading the prologue from the Frauenkirche balcony at 5:30 pm, is the single most photographed moment of the season. Strasbourg opens the same day. Both cities are full from the first weekend, so this is the one to book now.
For fewer crowds: the first week of December, midweek. Markets are fully running, school holidays have not started, and Tuesday-to-Thursday trains between Cologne, Nuremberg and Vienna are cheap. Prague on a weekday in early December is the best value of the lot.
For after Christmas: Prague. Most German and Austrian markets close on December 23 or 24. Prague runs to January 6 and adds New Year's Eve fireworks over the river.
Getting between them
The five cities sit on one rail axis. Cologne to Nuremberg is about three and a half hours on ICE trains; Nuremberg to Prague is a direct express of around three and a half hours; Prague to Vienna four hours by Railjet; Vienna to Budapest two and a half. Strasbourg connects to Cologne via Frankfurt in about four hours. A week does three cities comfortably; two weeks does the whole line.
Staying online across five countries
This is the part a country eSIM gets wrong: a Germany plan stops at the Austrian border. VoyaSIM's Europe plans cover Austria, Germany, France, Czechia and Hungary on one eSIM, and the phone moves between partner networks as you cross borders with nothing to switch.
Live prices on October 21, 2026, from the VoyaSIM Europe catalog:
| Plan | Coverage | Price |
|---|---|---|
| 300 MB per day, daily-renewing | Europe 30+ (34 countries) | $1.10 per day |
| 5 GB, 30 days | 35 countries | $6.80 |
| 10 GB, 31 days | 31 countries | $8.40 |
| 1.5 GB per day, daily-renewing | Europe 30+ (34 countries) | $5.50 per day |
A market trip is light on data: maps between squares, train tickets in the DB Navigator or ÖBB apps, messages, photos. Around 500 MB a day is typical, 1 GB if you post video every evening, so the 5 GB plan covers ten days for most travelers and the 300 MB daily plan suits a weekend. Each plan page lists the exact countries under Coverage; check it if your route includes Switzerland or the Balkans.
Install before you leave and keep data roaming off on your home SIM, so the only line carrying data abroad is the eSIM. The plan starts when the phone first connects in Europe, which for most people is the airport Wi-Fi-free moment at baggage claim.
Small print worth reading
- Glühwein deposit: every market charges a mug deposit of a few euros; return the mug or keep it as the souvenir.
- Cards: Vienna, Cologne and Nuremberg stalls mostly take cards now; Prague and Budapest stalls often prefer cash, and Prague's market prices are in koruna.
- Opening days differ: check each market's day-by-day hours for Sunday closures and early closes on December 24 before planning a last-evening visit.
