Quick answer

The 32nd Dubai Shopping Festival runs from December 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, 45 days that cover the Christmas holidays, New Year's Eve and the city's best weather. Expect daily raffles, DSF Nights concerts, Hatta events and the fireworks over Burj Khalifa on December 31. One thing catches visitors every year: regular WhatsApp and FaceTime calls are blocked in the UAE, while messaging and data work normally. A VoyaSIM Dubai eSIM runs on du with 5G; 5 GB for 30 days costs $16 as of October 21, 2026.

Dubai Shopping Festival 2026–27: the dates

The 32nd Dubai Shopping Festival runs from Thursday, December 4, 2026 to Sunday, January 17, 2027: 45 days, announced in October 2026 by Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism and reported by Arabian Business and Emirates 24/7. The headline pieces return: daily raffles and prize draws at the malls, DSF Nights concerts, the DSF Auto Season, the Hatta Wadi Hub program in the mountains, and a new beachfront attraction at Sunset Beach. The full program with concerts and the big retail offers is published in the weeks before the opening.

What the dates mean for a visitor: the festival overlaps with Christmas, with New Year's Eve and with the first two weeks of January, which is Dubai's peak season anyway. Flights and hotels for December 26 to January 2 are the most expensive of the year; the first week of December and the second week of January have the same weather and the same sales at a fraction of the price.

New Year's Eve in Dubai

The fireworks and light show at Burj Khalifa are the centerpiece and the Downtown area around the Dubai Fountain fills by late afternoon. Entry to Downtown is controlled on December 31 and the metro to Burj Khalifa/Dubai Mall station is the way in; roads close. Other displays run at Atlantis The Palm, Bluewaters, Global Village and along JBR. Book a restaurant or hotel terrace with a view if you want to sit; standing spots are free and crowded. One practical point: on December 31 the mobile networks around Downtown are saturated for an hour either side of midnight. Send the "happy new year" messages early and expect video to stall.

03

The rule that surprises everyone: no WhatsApp calls

The UAE's telecom regulator restricts voice and video calls over internet apps. On every network in the country, including travel eSIMs, WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype and most VoIP apps make calls that connect to nothing. Messaging, voice notes, photos and video messages work normally; it is the live call that is blocked. The licensed alternatives are BOTIM and ToTok (the UAE's approved calling apps; a free trial is often bundled with tourist SIMs) and, for a short call home, an ordinary phone call on your home SIM at its roaming rate. Zoom and Microsoft Teams meetings generally work for business users, with occasional restrictions on some networks. Our UAE eSIM guide covers the details and the workarounds.

Staying online in Dubai

VoyaSIM's UAE eSIM runs on du with 5G where your phone supports it. Coverage is complete in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and along the highways between the emirates, and good in Hatta and the desert resorts.

Live prices on October 21, 2026, from the VoyaSIM UAE catalog:

Plan Price Fits
1 GB, 7 days $4.40 A long weekend of maps and messages
3 GB, 15 days $9.60 A week with photos backed up on Wi-Fi
5 GB, 30 days $16 A week to ten days without rationing
1 GB per day, daily-renewing $4.50 per day New Year's week with a lot of video

A Dubai trip is a Careem-and-maps trip: the ride-hailing app, Google Maps, mall directories and messaging use a few hundred megabytes a day; photo and video uploads are what push it past a gigabyte. Hotel Wi-Fi is universal and fast, so leave backups to it.

Install the eSIM at home over Wi-Fi and switch its data roaming on when you land; the plan starts at that first connection. Keep the home SIM on for bank SMS, with its own data roaming off.

Small print for December

  • Sunday is a working day: the UAE weekend is Saturday–Sunday since 2022, but malls and attractions run seven days; government offices close on the weekend.
  • Dress and drink: malls and public places expect covered shoulders and knees; alcohol is served in licensed hotels and restaurants, not sold in the street.
  • Ramadan is later: in 2027 Ramadan begins around February 8, well after this window, so December and January are unaffected.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What are the Dubai Shopping Festival 2026–27 dates?

December 4, 2026 to January 17, 2027, according to the announcement reported by Arabian Business and Emirates 24/7 in October 2026. The full program is published closer to the start.

Do WhatsApp calls work in Dubai with an eSIM?

No. Voice and video calls over WhatsApp, FaceTime and Skype are blocked by the UAE's telecom regulator on every network, including travel eSIMs. Messaging, photos and data work normally; for calls use the licensed apps (BOTIM, ToTok) or a regular phone call on your home SIM.

Is December a good time for Dubai?

It is the best time: daytime highs around 26 °C, cool evenings, every outdoor attraction open. It is also the busiest and most expensive, especially December 26 to January 2.

How much data do I need for a week in Dubai?

About 1 GB a day covers maps, Careem rides, messaging and photos; 5 GB for 30 days is enough for most week-long trips, and the daily-renewing plans suit heavy video use.
