eSIM in Thailand: Coverage, Prices & Setup

By the VoyaSIM team · Updated October 7, 2026 · 10 min read

Quick answer

A travel eSIM is the cheapest, least-hassle way to get mobile data in Thailand: VoyaSIM plans start at $0.50, install by QR code before you fly, and connect to True Corporation’s TrueMove H and dtac networks (daily plans add AIS too) the moment you land. No airport counter, no passport registration queue, no pocket-wifi deposit — and on a 7-day trip it costs a fraction of your home carrier’s roaming pass.

Why you need mobile data in Thailand

Thailand runs on your phone more than most destinations. Rides are hailed with Grab or Bolt rather than flagged down, the guesthouse, dive shop and longtail-boat captain all confirm plans on LINE or WhatsApp, menus and street signs get translated through your camera, and the islands are reached by ferry timetables that live in apps, not on noticeboards. QR payments at markets and 7-Eleven are everywhere, and they need a connection too.

Free wifi exists at airports, hotels, malls and most cafés, but it is exactly that: indoor wifi. It disappears on the street, on the songthaew out of town, on the ferry and on the beach — which is where you actually need a map. Treat it as a bonus for uploading photos, not as your plan.

Traveler tip

Install your eSIM at home on wifi before you fly. The validity only starts counting when your phone first connects to a Thai network, so you land with working data instead of hunting for airport wifi to download a QR code your email can’t open.

02

Thailand’s networks — and which ones your eSIM uses

Thailand is effectively a two-player market. True Corporation was formed on 1 March 2023 when dtac and TrueMove H amalgamated — the biggest telecom merger in Southeast Asia — and now runs both brands on one combined network. AIS is the other national operator, and in Opensignal’s June 2025 report it took most of the awards, including Best 5G Network and the Coverage Experience award. The state-owned NT is a distant third.

Thailand's mobile networks compared
NetworkWho it isKnown for
AISMarket leader, ~95% 5G population coverage (company figure, July 2024)Most Opensignal awards in June 2025 incl. Best 5G Network; field reports rate it the safest pick on small islands, ferries and mountain roads.
TrueMove H + dtac (True Corporation)Merged operator since March 2023, c. 55 million mobile customersLargest customer base; strong in Bangkok and resort areas, full 5G in the capital and the Eastern Economic Corridor.
NTState-ownedSmall network — travel eSIMs don’t use it.

Here is what that means for VoyaSIM plans, straight from the live catalog: every fixed-data Thailand plan connects to TrueMove H and dtac (both True Corporation, both 5G), and the daily-renewing plans add AIS as well, so your phone can hop to whichever of the three has the strongest signal. One exception is worth knowing: the 50 GB / 10-day bucket runs on True’s 4G network only. Each plan page lists its exact networks before checkout.

Hardware note: Thailand is switching off 2G and 3G — the regulator asked AIS and True for shutdown roadmaps targeting Q3 2026, and 2G/3G-only devices stopped being approved for import on 30 June 2025. Any LTE-capable eSIM phone from the last six years is fine; a very old handset without 4G is not.

03

Coverage: Bangkok, the islands and the north

In Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Phuket town and every provincial city, 4G is everywhere and 5G is the norm on the main streets. Field speed guides put Bangkok 4G at roughly 25–60 Mbps and 5G at 100–300 Mbps; popular islands sit around 10–30 Mbps; rural and mountain roads drop to 5–15 Mbps or the occasional 3G cell. That is plenty for maps, translation, video calls and streaming — the differences show up when you leave the resort strip.

  • Bangkok transit: the elevated BTS Skytrain keeps a signal the whole way. The underground MRT has coverage on platforms and in the newer Blue Line extension tunnels; expect brief dips between older stations.
  • Phuket, Samui, Phangan: strong around the main beaches and towns. Travellers’ 2026 field reports found AIS the most consistent on coastal roads and in hillier inland sections, with True close behind in the resort zones.
  • Phi Phi, Tao, Lipe, Lanta, Chang: the main village and west-coast beaches are fine; viewpoint trails, the east coasts and longtail routes between islands lose signal on every network. Download offline maps for island days.
  • Pai, Mae Hong Son and the far north: towns are covered; the mountain loops between them have real dead zones. Save your route before you set off.

Practical upshot: on a VoyaSIM daily plan your phone can use AIS, TrueMove H or dtac interchangeably, which covers the island and mountain gaps better than any single-network SIM. Fixed-data plans run on True’s two brands — more than enough for Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui, the trips most people take.

04

How much data do you actually need?

Budget around 1–2 GB a day for a normal Thailand trip: Grab and Google Maps all day, LINE and WhatsApp, camera translation, Instagram, a few short videos. Hotspotting a laptop or streaming on the ferry pushes you past 3 GB a day. For scale, a 30-second social video upload costs 80–150 MB and a video call burns 300–500 MB an hour.

Ran out mid-trip? Top up from My eSIMs without reinstalling anything, or switch on auto top-up at checkout and we refill the plan when it runs low. That safety net is why we’d rather see you start smaller than overbuy on day one.

05

What Thailand eSIM plans cost

VoyaSIM sells two kinds of Thailand plan. Fixed data plans give you one bucket that lasts the whole validity window — from $0.50 for a 7-day starter to $16.40 for 20 GB over 30 days. Daily-renewing plans refill every day: 1 GB a day is $2.70, 3 GB a day is $7.30, and you stack as many days as your trip needs. All prices are in USD, with no roaming fees and no contract on top.

For comparison, the airport tourist SIMs cost ฿399–1,199 (about $11–35) for 8–30 days and need a passport scan at the counter, while an unlimited daily pass from your home carrier runs $10–12 a day. Our 10 GB plan works out to about $0.94/GB.

06

Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand on one eSIM

Doing the classic Singapore → Kuala Lumpur → Bangkok loop, or Bangkok plus a Penang or Langkawi detour? The Singapore & Malaysia & Thailand regional plan covers all three countries on a single eSIM: 1 GB for 7 days is $2.80, 5 GB for 30 days is $8.80 and 20 GB for 30 days is $25.80. As you cross a border your phone simply drops onto that country’s partner network — nothing to swap or re-scan.

The trade-off is price per gigabyte: the Thailand-only 10 GB plan is $9.40 against $15.20 for the regional one, so if 80% of your trip is in Thailand, buy the Thailand plan and add a small Singapore or Malaysia plan for the other days.

07

Passport registration: what applies to you

Thailand tightened SIM rules to fight scam call centres. Since the NBTC amendment that took effect on 16 May 2026, anyone without Thai nationality can register at most three SIMs per operator, must do it in person with a passport at a branch or authorised dealer, and must activate the SIM within 60 days or re-verify in person. That is why the airport counters scan your passport and why 7-Eleven SIMs still send you to a shop.

A travel eSIM sidesteps the queue: the profile is provisioned by the provider before you arrive and is data-only, so there is no counter, no form and no activation deadline to miss. Your home number stays on your physical SIM for calls and verification codes.

Good to know

Data-only lines can’t dial Thailand’s emergency numbers natively — 191 (police), 1669 (medical) and 1155 (Tourist Police, English-speaking, 24 h). Keep your home SIM enabled for emergencies; everything else happens over LINE, WhatsApp or FaceTime.

08

eSIM vs airport SIM vs pocket wifi vs roaming

Every option below gets you online in Thailand. The differences are price, queueing and how much hardware you want to babysit. Third-party prices were checked in October 2026.

Cost comparison of Thailand connectivity options for a 7-day trip
OptionTypical cost, 7 daysThe catch
Travel eSIM$1.80–$9.40 total (1–10 GB)Data-only — calls happen over LINE, WhatsApp or FaceTime. Needs an eSIM-capable, unlocked phone.
Airport tourist SIM฿399–1,199 (≈ $11–35) for 8–30 daysPassport scan and a queue after a long-haul flight; the same AIS SIM costs ฿299–599 in town, so the airport mark-up is 30–50%.
Pocket wifi rental$35–42 (≈ $5–6/day) + ฿1,000 depositA second device to charge, carry and return; airport pick-up costs extra and optional insurance is ฿40/day.
Home-carrier day pass$84 (US, $12/day) · £42–45 (UK, £6–6.13/day) · AU$70 Telstra / AU$35 OptusDaily caps and throttling — and a single background sync can trigger a full day’s charge.

Pocket wifi still makes sense for one niche: a group of four sharing one connection with older, eSIM-incompatible phones. For everyone else the maths stopped being close a few years ago. If you want the full breakdown across carriers, we compared every roaming alternative here.

09

Setting up your eSIM for Thailand

  1. Check your phone. Dial *#06# — if an EID number appears, your phone supports eSIM. It also needs to be carrier-unlocked. iPhone XS and newer, Pixel 3 and newer, and recent Samsung Galaxy models all qualify.
  2. Buy your plan and scan the QR code. It arrives by email within minutes. Install at home on wifi: iOS → Settings → Cellular → Add eSIM; Android → Settings → Network & Internet → Add SIM.
  3. Label the lines. Set the VoyaSIM eSIM as your data line and keep your home number active for calls, texts and the bank’s verification codes.
  4. When you land: turn the eSIM line on and enable Data Roaming for it — and only it. Travel eSIMs show up as “roaming” on TrueMove H, dtac or AIS; that is normal and costs nothing extra. Turn data roaming off on your home SIM.
  5. Signal bars but no data? Toggle airplane mode and give it a minute to register. Still stuck — check the APN settings from your confirmation email, or message support from the chat widget on this site.
Island days

Before a boat trip, download the Google Maps area for the island and screenshot your hotel’s LINE thread. Coverage drops on the water and on east-coast beaches no matter which network you are on.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need an eSIM for Thailand, or is free wifi enough?

Free wifi is common indoors — airports, hotels, malls, cafés — but it vanishes on the street, in a Grab, on the ferry and at the beach, which is where you need maps, LINE and ride-hailing. Nearly every traveller ends up wanting mobile data; an eSIM is the cheapest way to get it without an airport queue.

Which Thai network will my eSIM connect to?

VoyaSIM’s fixed-data Thailand plans connect to TrueMove H and dtac (both brands of True Corporation, both 5G). The daily-renewing plans also include AIS, so the phone can use whichever of the three has the strongest signal — useful on small islands and mountain roads where AIS tends to reach further. The exact list is shown on every plan page before you pay.

Do I need to register my passport for a travel eSIM?

No. Thailand’s passport-registration rules (max three SIMs per operator, in-person verification, 60-day activation window) apply to SIMs sold in Thailand. A travel eSIM is provisioned by the provider before you arrive, so there is no counter and no form. Keep your passport handy for immigration and hotels as usual.

How much data do I need for a week in Thailand?

Most visitors use 1–2 GB a day — about 10 GB a week. Light users who mostly use maps and messaging manage on 5 GB; heavy users who stream, take video calls or hotspot a laptop should pick a daily-renewing plan or the 50 GB bucket. VoyaSIM’s 10 GB / 30-day Thailand plan is $9.40, and you can top up without reinstalling.

Can I make phone calls with a Thailand travel eSIM?

Travel eSIMs are data-only, so there is no Thai phone number — calls happen over LINE, WhatsApp or FaceTime, all of which work normally in Thailand, and your own number stays active on your home SIM. Data-only lines cannot natively dial the emergency numbers 191, 1669 and 1155, so keep the home SIM enabled.

Is 5G included?

Yes. Most VoyaSIM Thailand plans are marked 3G/4G/5G and connect to 5G where the network offers it, at no extra cost. In practice 4G already delivers tens of Mbps across the country; 5G is a city-centre bonus rather than something to choose a plan over.

Does the eSIM work on the islands and in the north?

Main beaches, villages and towns are well covered on every network. Signal drops on longtail and ferry crossings, on remote east-coast beaches and on mountain roads around Pai and Mae Hong Son regardless of operator. Download offline maps for those days; on a daily plan the phone can also fall back to AIS, which field reports rate best beyond the resort strips.

When does my plan’s validity start?

When your phone first connects to a partner network in Thailand, not when you install the eSIM. Install at home on wifi days before the flight and the full validity is still waiting for you when you land.

What if I run out mid-trip?

Open My eSIMs and add a top-up — it lands on the same eSIM within minutes, no new QR code. Or switch on auto top-up at checkout: we add the same plan again when you have used 85% (or more days when a daily plan is on its last day) and send you a note each time, up to five times.
