For maps, messaging, email and some social media, around 500 MB a day is enough; add photos, music and the odd video and 1 GB a day is comfortable; streaming video or working from the phone needs 2–3 GB a day. These are estimates: your own phone's usage screen for the last trip is the best guide.
Rough figures per hour
- Maps navigation: 5–10 MB per hour (less with offline maps)
- Messaging and email: a few MB per hour, more with photos
- Social media scrolling: 100–200 MB per hour
- Music streaming: 50–150 MB per hour
- Video calls: 300–700 MB per hour
- Video streaming: 300 MB (standard) to 1 GB (HD) per hour
Choosing between fixed and daily
Short trips with steady use suit a fixed-data plan (one bucket, no daily reset). Long trips, or days with heavy use, suit a daily-renewing plan, which refills every morning. If in doubt, buy the smaller fixed plan: you can top it up from My eSIMs when it runs low. More detail in how to choose an eSIM plan.
Frequently asked questions
Does hotel Wi-Fi count against the plan?
No. Only data sent through the VoyaSIM line counts. Use Wi-Fi for downloads and updates.
What if I run out?
Open the eSIM in My eSIMs and tap Add more data, or let auto top-up handle it.
